Operating Systems Support for Busy Internet Servers
نویسنده
چکیده
The Internet has experienced exponential growth in the use of the World-Wide Web, and rapid growth in the use of other Internet services such as VSENET news and electronic mail. These applications qualitatively differ from other network applications in the stresses they impose on busy server systems. Unlike traditional distributed systems, Internet servers must cope with huge user communities, short interactions, and long network latencies. Such servers require different kinds of operating system features to manage their resources effectively.

متن کاملResearch Summary and Agenda
My research interests cover several areas of building and measuring complex systems, including operating systems, distributed systems, compilers, and networks. The core theme of my research is harnessing the enormous potential for large-scale computing environments, such as workstation clusters and Internet service platforms. My research often takes the approach of reevaluating programming inte...
متن کاملBetter operating system features for faster network
Widely-used operating systems provide inadequate support for large-scale Internet server applications. Their algorithms and interfaces fail to eeciently support either event-driven or multi-threaded servers. They provide poor control over the scheduling and management of machine resources, making it diicult to provide robust and controlled service. We propose new UNIX interfaces to improve scal...

Internet servers, Web servers, performance, select, event dispatching Several previous studies have examined techniques for improving Internet server performance by investigating and improving operating system support for event-dispatching mechanisms. These studies have been mainly motivated by the commonly held belief that the overhead incurred in obtaining network I/O events using the select ...
متن کاملThe Case for a Factored Operating System (fos)
The next decade will afford us computer chips with 1,000 10,000 cores on a single piece of silicon. Contemporary operating systems have been designed to operate on a single core or small number of cores and hence are not well suited to manage and provide operating system services at such large scale. Managing 10,000 cores is so fundamentally different from managing two cores that the traditiona...
